# Tissue Mast vs Pushover

Pushover is the one product that does what Mast Pager does: a $4.99 app that rings your phone when something posts to a URL, repeats until you acknowledge, and gets through Do Not Disturb. The difference is everything on the other side of the URL.

Pushover is $4.99 once per platform, after a 30-day trial, with 10,000 messages a month. Its emergency priority retries at least every 30 seconds for up to three hours until acknowledged, and the first person in a group to acknowledge cancels it for the rest. Teams is $5 a user a month. Pushover sends what it is told to send and checks nothing itself.

Mast Pager is free on iPhone and Android, and rings the same way. Tissue Mast is the monitor behind it: probes that fetch your sites from eight locations, vitals that page when a cron job stops, and on call for a team at $79 a month for up to ten people. If you already have a monitor and only need the ring, Pushover is a fine answer.

## What each one is

Two sentences each, before any numbers.

- **Pushover** — A push-notification delivery service with an app for iPhone, Android and desktop. Anything that can make an HTTP request can send a message; priorities run from silent to emergency, and emergency messages repeat until acknowledged. It has no monitoring of its own.
- **Tissue Mast** — An uptime monitor with a pager attached. Probes fetch your URLs from eight locations, vitals page you when a cron job does not check in, a channel is a URL anything can post to, and the Mast Pager app rings through silent mode and Do Not Disturb until someone acknowledges.

## Side by side

Every figure below came off the other company’s own pages, on one day, and is dated underneath.

| | Pushover | Tissue Mast |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The app | $4.99 once, per platform, after 30 days free. | Free on iPhone and Android. |
| Without an account | 10,000 messages a month to one user key. | 2 channels, 1 vital, 1,000 messages a month, 7 days of history. |
| A team | Pushover for Teams, $5 a user a month. | Team, $79 a month for up to 10 people; Company, $149 for up to 25. |
| Rings through Do Not Disturb | Yes, on emergency priority. | Yes, on a page. |
| Repeats until acknowledged | Yes: a retry every 30 seconds or more, for up to three hours. | Yes, every two minutes until someone acknowledges, then the next person. |
| Who is paged | The user or group the sender names. | Whoever is on call, then the next person, then everyone, on a schedule you set. |
| Watching a website | No. | Probes from eight locations, with a vote before anyone is paged. |
| Watching a cron job | No. | Vitals: a check-in at the end of the job, a page when it is late. |
| Status page | No. | Three on Solo, five on Team, ten on Company, on your own domain if you like. |
| What else can send to it | Anything that can make an HTTP request, and a long list of apps that already do. | Anything that can make an HTTP request. |

## Where Pushover is the better choice

You already have a monitor. If Uptime Kuma, Healthchecks or your own scripts decide when to wake you and you only need the ringing, Pushover is $4.99 once and it does exactly that. Buying a second monitor to get a pager would be the wrong shape.

Desktop. Pushover has a desktop client; Mast Pager is a phone and watch app.

Built-in support. Many apps list Pushover in their notification settings, so setting it up means picking it from a menu and pasting your user key. Mast isn’t in those menus. It works in any app that has a webhook option, where you paste your channel’s URL instead, but an app whose only phone option is Pushover can’t send to Mast.

## Where Tissue Mast is the better choice

The thing that notices is the thing that rings. A Pushover message says what the sender wrote; a Mast page says the 03:00 backup is twenty minutes late, or that six of eight locations got a 503, because the monitor and the pager are the same system.

On call. A Pushover group pages everyone in it at once. Tissue Mast pages the person on call, moves on after five minutes, and shows on the lock screen who has it.

The app is free, and so is the account for ten sites. If you want the monitor and not the pager you can still use it: a channel is a URL, and anything that posts to it rings.

Mast Pager is free with no account. If you only need the ring, try it beside Pushover and keep whichever you like; if you also need the thing that decides when to ring, that is the rest of this site.
